While same-sex relations are not known to have ever been criminalised in Vietnam history, legal rights are still not recognised for LGBTQ individuals and social acceptance remains negligible. In recent years the Vietnamese government has made significant pledges to recognize the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, tangible progress, however, has lagged behind the promises.
That being said, Vietnam is a relatively hassle-free destination for LGBTQ travellers, foreigners are typically exempt from any social stigma and will find Vietnam an extremely hospitable and welcoming destination.
Viet Pride marches take place in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and there is a low-key gay scene found in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. In general, all public displays of affection, of any sexual orientation, are much rarer in Vietnam. Vietnamese are naturally quite private and reserved, and visitors are advised to follow suit, respectfully.
